# Sales tax exemption and VAT

Depending on your location, Docker may collect sales tax or VAT on your
subscription. Tax relief is the same idea in both cases, but the process
differs:

- United States customers request exemption by submitting a tax exemption
  certificate through Docker Support. The billing portal has no self-serve
  tax ID field for US customers.
- Customers in VAT countries enter a tax ID or VAT number themselves when they
  purchase a Docker plan.

## United States tax exemption

US customers submit a support ticket with a valid tax exemption certificate
to receive tax-exempt status. Docker reviews the certificate and applies the
exemption to your billing profile. You can apply for tax-exempt status:

- Before you purchase, submit your certificate and wait for Docker to approve
  it. After approval, you can purchase without sales tax.
- If you were charged sales tax, open a support ticket to coordinate with
  Docker Support on exempt status.

### Prerequisites

Before submitting your certificate, confirm the following:

- Customer name matches the name on the certificate.
- The certificate lists Docker, Inc. as the seller or vendor, with all
  relevant fields completed.
- The certificate is signed, dated, and not expired.
- You've included the Docker ID or namespace(s) for all accounts the
  certificate applies to.

> [!TIP]
>
> You can use the same certificate for multiple namespaces when applicable.

### Contact information

Use the following contact information on your certificate:

```text
Docker, Inc.
3790 El Camino Real #1052
Palo Alto, CA 94306
(415) 941-0376
```

   to start the tax certificate registration process.
1. Enter **Tax certificate** as the support ticket **Subject**.

1. Follow the instructions that appear for submitting a tax certificate.
1. Complete all required fields on the support form.

   the file, or selecting **Browse files**.
1. Select **Submit**.

Docker Support contacts you if additional information is required. Docker sends
an email confirmation after applying the tax exemption status to your account.

## Add a VAT number or tax ID

When you select a VAT-applicable country during checkout, a tax ID field
appears. Customers in VAT countries enter their tax ID or VAT number
during checkout without opening a support ticket.

Your VAT number must include your country prefix. For example, enter
`DE123456789` for a German VAT number.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The tax ID field appears during checkout only when you select
> **I'm purchasing as a business**. It doesn't appear when you edit an
> existing payment method or billing details in billing settings.

Add a VAT number or tax ID when you
